Doctors last night revealed they had removed a malignant breast cancer from Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, but added that her long-term health prospects were good. The Legislative Council President yesterday appeared in good spirits after surgery on Saturday at Queen Mary Hospital. Mrs Fan, 56, made an appeal to women of her age or up to 10 years younger to have annual medical check-ups. Her tumour was diagnosed two weeks ago after a routine visit to her doctor. 'I feel that I am very lucky to have discovered it early,' she said, adding that her operation went smoothly. 'I have no regrets in my life . . . I feel I am very lucky to have seen so much.' Associate professor at the department of surgery at the hospital, Dr Louis Chow Wing-cheong, said the cancer was in its second stage. He said there was an 80 per cent chance Mrs Fan would make a full recovery if the cancer did not return over the next five years. He said she was well enough to attend the new Legco sitting starting on October 10. Mrs Fan said she would resume duties as soon as possible, attending the opening ceremony of her new district office in Sai Wan Ho on September 15. She also pledged to cast her vote at the Legco Election Committee by-election the following day. Asked whether she would stand for direct elections in 2004, Mrs Fan said it would depend on her health and whether she had adequate volunteers to help her. She has received more than 100 greeting cards, baskets of fruit, flowers and chocolates in her private ward room at the hospital.
