'My parents don't scold, but beat me instead . . . I don't want to have private tutorials every day . . . I'm forced to play the piano and paint . . . I need freedom.'

These were some of the complaints voiced by children about their relationship with parents on the TV programme Parenting, currently screened at 7 pm on TVB on Fridays.

The programme documents deteriorating relationships between parents and children nowadays.

Parents often miss opportunities to communicate with their children and rarely try to understand them. Why?

'We get tired from our heavy workload . . . I expect my child to be exposed to the arts. What's wrong with that?'

Parents and children do not know each other well. To address the problem, Radio Television Hong Kong launched the programme and invited psychiatrist Dr Sylvia Chen and social worker Tik Chi-yuen to be guides for a group of parents.
