I was surprised, on returning to my home in Wang Tong on Lantau a few days ago, to see construction work taking place on open land.

Residents were not consulted or informed about the change of use of this area, which is directly in front of many homes.

I have been told by the people working on this project that this area is to be used to host wargames. Having had some experience of this type of activity on large, open areas with restricted access in other parts of the world, I am somewhat alarmed and consider such use of the land to be dangerous to the public.

This is a small area surrounded by homes and public rights of way. It is separated from Silvermine Bay beach only by a narrow strip of trees, bushes and the usual seaside facilities. This beach is very popular with holidaymakers.

Wargame participants use 'guns' to fire paint balls at high velocity to 'kill' the enemy. When playing, you are protected by several layers of substantial clothing. In spite of this, the flesh is often bruised. How can accidents involving members of the public be prevented?

Police officers on duty carry guns. How would they feel about one of these gun-toting combatants jumping out in front of them with a gun in his hand?
