I noted, with interest, recent reports about Hong Kong trying to learn from Macau about preserving historic sites and buildings.
Certainly Macau has preserved many buildings and it is very pleasant to be able to visit them. However, there is one blot on Macau's record.
What could arguably be termed the most well-known view on the China coast was the view of the Praia Grande. This view has been ruined over the past half century, but the latest monstrosity to deface it is the new tower that was reported in your paper recently.
Like Hong Kong, Macau has given up one of its best assets, its traditional face to the world. Let us hope that the authorities here can learn the lesson and belatedly try to preserve the natural skyline of Hong Kong.
