Hong Kong Academy of Acupuncture president David Yung Chin-wing believes most acupuncturists in Hong Kong use disinfected disposable needles.
'Disposable needles have been getting popular for about 10 years, with the cost going down,' he said.
'A set of five needles costs only $50, so many practitioners are willing to use them.' He said that before the 1990s, the needles were usually disinfected with alcohol.
He added: 'We also have verbal advice to our members to use disposable needles, which are more hygienic and reliable.'
But Mr Yung admitted there was no guarantee that all practitioners followed the academy's advice. 'Our recommendations are only voluntary, it is up to the practitioners to follow. We have no control over them. So we really hope the Government can set out regulations to control hygiene in the procedures,' he said.
The academy represents more than 100 acupuncturists in the SAR.
