You are totally out of touch if you still think environmentally-friendly vehicles can only run on petrol or LPG.

Here is a chance to build your own solar cart - and win a trophy too!

Following the success of the first Solar Cart Race in January, Friends of The Earth (FoE) Hong Kong is organising another on November 24 at Southorn Playground in Wan Chai. It is also one of the organisation's major fund-raising events, with all donations after cost deductions going to FoE's renewable energy education programmes for young people.

FoE senior project officer Vivien Cheng Yu-wai said: 'By organising this cart race we want to promote the use of renewable energy in Hong Kong. The energy sources used in the territory are mostly non-renewable, like coal, crude oil and petrol. They are cheap but they threaten the environment.'

Participants will be split into two categories: high school, for third to seventh formers; and advanced, for tertiary students and adults.

Teams can either design and build their own carts with the basic materials provided or assemble the solar/pedal hybrid cart designed by FoE.
