A Chinese medicine practitioner went on trial yesterday for allegedly poisoning a patient with home-made pills.

Wong Kim-ping faced two charges of possessing for sale a drug unfit for human consumption. He denied both charges at Tuen Mun Court.

The Department of Health confirmed Wong, who made his own Bao Ning Dan pills, is the first herbalist in Hong Kong to be charged with the offence.

Fung Yuk-yee told Tuen Mun court yesterday that she suffered serious bone pain about two months after taking a Chinese medicine prepared by Wong in August last year.

She was sent to the accident and emergency department at Tuen Mun Hospital in October but a doctor believed the pain was caused by influenza and she was sent home.

Ms Fung said she failed to tell the doctor about the pills.

She was readmitted to Tuen Mun hospital twice in October and November after her health deteriorated. Blood tests confirmed she suffered lead poisoning.
