Why you can trust SCMP
BIDDING HAS BEGUN for 400 lots in the world's largest online charity auction at www.chivas.com.

The amazing array of once-in-a-lifetime lots - 'The World's Most Wanted Items And Experiences' - consists of celebrity encounters, autographed sports memorabilia and adventure trips that money alone can't buy - though you may pay dearly.

Want to be forgiven for your sins at the ultimate confessional? A four-day tour of the Vatican culminates in a meeting with Pope John Paul II. Would it be music to your ears to be led by former Beatles producer Sir George Martin on a tour through London's legendary Abbey Road recording studio? Or choose to spend seven days on a Tanzanian safari with primatologist Dr Jane Goodall making introductions to our evolutionary cousins at Gombe National Park, where she has researched chimpanzees for 40 years.

Local heroes are also feeling altruistic. Martial arts supremo Jackie Chan is offering a day on the set of his next movie Highbinders. Up against so many renowned personalities is Ken Chan Kai-tai, Hong Kong's host of game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? - and he's a little nervous that bidders will inevitably compare him with the rest of the field.

'The organisers spent quite a bit of time reassuring me I'm qualified,' says Chan. 'I don't know if I can pull in a good bid. Five thousand would be good enough for me. I don't know what I can do.'

Chan's winning bidder gets to use his services in any way they please. He figures he'll be asked to host a dinner party or perhaps emcee a corporate function.

'The World's Most Wanted Items And Experiences' auction is the brainchild of Scotch whisky distiller Chivas Regal, which came up with the idea as a means to celebrate its 200th anniversary. It's a marketing coup in which the promotional vehicle is philanthropy. The project was organised in less than one year, says Simon Ng, Seagram Asia-Pacific brand manager, and more than 115 leading charities will benefit from all the proceeds, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Oxfam and the Rainforest Foundation. More than 30 countries are involved, and although Chivas has set no specific goal, it hopes to raise 'millions of pounds', Ng says.
