Hong Kong broadcaster TVB was one of a handful of world news organisations to attend the press conference held by the Taleban in response to US demands over Osama bin Laden. The TVB logo was seen by millions around the world on a microphone set in front of Taleban ambassador Abdul Salam Zaeef at the briefing in Islamabad. TVB did not, however, broadcast the conference live yesterday afternoon. Stephen Loh Chan, the channel's news and information services controller, said it did not go live because it took place during children's programmes and the station had to get approval from the Office of the Telecommunications Authority to break into them. CNN aired the proceedings live, although it was delivered mainly in Arabic with only occasional English translations. TVB has sent three news editors, Eric Ng Hiu-tung, Lee Tak-shing and Chan Tik-biu, to Pakistan to cover developments along with five crew members. 'We believe this is a very important incident for the whole world. We want to cover the latest development first-hand,' Mr Loh said. 'They are there mainly to cover the refugees flooding in and the evacuation of Chinese expatriates. We don't have plans to pull them out yet. But in any case, the frontline people will have a say in when they should leave.' Mr Loh said news editors and crew members had gone on a voluntary basis.
