I refer to the letter from Helena Gorman headlined 'Department's pool rule is dumb and dangerous' (Sunday Morning Post, September 9), concerning the wearing of a hat for protection against sunburn at public swimming pools.
We review our arrangements on the use of public swimming facilities from time to time. We are fully aware of the need for swimmers to take preventive measures against sunburn. In fact, we allow them to wear clean T-shirts and use suntan oil.
Regarding the wearing of hats, we agree they should be allowed and have instructed our pool managers that the wearing of a clean hat to protect a swimmer against sunburn should be permitted.
We are grateful to Ms Gorman for bringing this matter to our attention.
