An insurance agent duped a US resident into buying a fake Rolex watch for US$2,500 (HK$19,500) through Internet auction Web site eBay, a court heard yesterday. Randy Liu Chun-yan, 23, made a sale to US bidder Lorraine Li Yong-nong, 32, in April. He assured her the watch was genuine. Ms Li sent Liu US$2,535 - which included a shipping charge - and received a watch two months later. But suspecting it was a different model from the one she thought she had bought, she took it for inspection and was told it was fake. She then lodged a complaint with Hong Kong police, Eastern Court heard. Defence lawyer Chan Chung said Liu's bankrupt father had given Liu his genuine Rolex to sell, and Ms Li contacted Liu over this watch. But Liu later found a fake for $800 in Mongkok and used it to cheat Ms Li. Mr Chan said Liu gave his father the money Ms Li had sent. He then sold his father's genuine watch for $14,000 in Mongkok. Liu pleaded guilty to theft from Ms Li. Magistrate Robert McNair adjourned sentencing to October 18 for reports.
