Pollution in Hong Kong is getting worse, and we must tackle this problem now. Protecting the environment is not just the work of the government, but is the responsibility of everyone. When burning petrol or diesel, many pollutants are formed, such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. To reduce these pollutants, we should fit catalytic converters to vehicles, and use unleaded petrol or LPG. In some countries, such as Brazil, alcohol is used as automobile fuel, which reduces pollutants effectively. In Hong Kong we could also use alcohol to fuel cars, although it provides less energy when burning. Protecting our environment is more important than the amount of speed at which a fuel propels a car. If we use LPG or alcohol as fuel, it may take longer to arrive at our destination, but we gain clean and fresh air. Buses should be powered by using low-sulphur diesel or even by an alternative method of propulsion like flywheels. In order to solve the problem of air pollution, we need to save energy. Try not to drive your own car if possible, as private cars can carry only a few people. A car's pollutants are almost the same as a bus which can carry sixty passengers at a time. At home, turn off electrical appliances when they're not in use, especially the air-conditioners, which require a lot energy to run. To ensure the health of our younger generation and our future, we must first ensure we protect the environment. Cathy is a student at Law Ting Pong Secondary School. Graphic: perspglo
