Tom was due to graduate from university very soon. He had written many letters of application for employment to numerous local companies, but none of them had replied to him. Then his sister discovered Tom's English was poor. The English in his letters was not good enough to get him a job in a big, international company, and his sister convinced him to improve his English skills. His is not an isolated case. Numerous companies say the standard of English in Hong Kong universities is not up to scratch. This is not a university students' problem alone. It is time for Hong Kong to wake up and realise the problems we all must face. Jenny is a student at Law Ting Pong Secondary School.
