Every student and parent cherishes good results in examinations, which is why so many parents encourage their children to take part in tutorial classes.

However, it does not necessarily follow that attending tutorial classes will tip the exam balance in the student's favour.

Yes, it is true that tutorial classes offer students more practise, and a hard-working student may enjoy good results. But whatever advantages you can come up with for attending these classes, it would be wise not to ignore the disadvantages that sometimes accompany the effort.

Many students lack self-motivation, and do not have the will to study on their own, but joining tutorial classes is not the way to solve this problem. If we let them join too many classes, it will make them incapable of studying by themselves.

Some students will become too dependent upon outside help, and will never learn how to manage their own time. They will always rely on someone else to tell them what to study, what to write - what to think.

This means they will have to attend tutorials every year, which is a great financial burden on their parents. The fees for tutorial classes are expensive. If they do not join every year, they will get bad results in their exams, because they do not know how to study by themselves.

Yes, classroom teachers usually emphasise theory rather than practice, and as a result, they do not have enough time to allow students to ask questions or to teach them how to answer questions in their lessons.
