HE CAME from a working-class family and used to wander the streets of Yau Ma Tei.

He was the first among his relatives to go to university. However, he dropped out and went to study theology. Yet, he did not become a priest. Today, Eric Ma Kit-wai is a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

'I wanted to know what life was about,' said Professor Ma. 'But after four years at theological college, I still had a lot of doubts. So, I thought I was not capable of preaching.'

He later went overseas to study television and film production. On returning to Hong Kong, he continued his studies at CUHK.

He became more and more interested in research and analysis, which paved the way for his teaching career. He has taught seven years at CUHK after getting a degree in philosophy in London.

He has also worked at TVB, ATV and RTHK.
