Tonight's Hong Kong premiere of a Thai movie about morality and sex has been cancelled after the film failed Television and Licensing Authority censorship standards.
The authority has asked the producer to cut sex scenes from Jan Dara - starring Hong Kong sex symbol and former beauty queen Christy Chung.
Chung plays a woman sexually obsessed with her teenage stepson.
The producers, Applause Pictures, said yesterday it had submitted the film to the authority for censorship and applied for classification as a category III movie, suitable for those aged 18 and above. It received a reply over the weekend asking for Chung's sex scenes to be cut.
The company said officials regarded the sex scenes as controversial because they involved a teenager. The firm said it did not know whether the movie could go on general release on Thursday as scheduled.
The movie, directed by Nonzee Nimibutr, is a cinematic adaptation of a Thai literary classic, The Story of Jan Dara , by Utsana Phleungtham.
