Trains of thought

We refer to the letter from Jonathan Conway of Sai Kung concerning the MTR Central subway from Hong Kong Station to Central Station (South China Morning Post, September 26). The subway was built as part of the Airport Railway project and it serves as an efficient pedestrian link for MTR passengers to interchange between Island Line/Tsuen Wan Line and the new Tung Chung Line. To ensure that the opportunities for fraud are reduced to a minimum, passengers must have a valid ticket within a defined 'paid' area.

However, Mr Conway will be pleased to note that there are a number of complimentary services for passengers using Octopus cards to ride on the Airport Express. These include a free MTR connection provided it is taken within one hour. As we understand it, Mr Conway took the Airport Express from Chek Lap Kok to Hong Kong Station on September 20. Assuming he used his Octopus card for this Airport Express journey, he should have enjoyed a free MTR connection within one hour. If that is the case, his Octopus card should not have been deducted $3.80 for the journey from Hong Kong Station to Central Station. I would suggest that Mr Conway gives me a call at 2993 2175 if further explanation is needed.
