Hailing an honest taxi driver . . .
I got out of a taxi in Bowen Road recently and realised I had left my wallet inside. My colleagues advised me to contact the police and cancel my credit cards. But less than an hour later, my phone rang and I was delighted to hear the voice of Li Yuet-keung, the taxi driver, telling me he had my wallet. He was in Kowloon but would bring it back the following morning. At 10am the next day, he arrived, smiling and holding out my wallet. As I took it, he was about to drive off, not wishing to take any reward for his honesty. Eventually, he reluctantly accepted a few dollars to pay for the tunnel fare despite having gone out of his way.
Mr Li, you're a good man. While your act of selfless honesty might surprise some people, in my 12 years in Hong Kong I have always found people to be honest, caring and generous, and I would have been more surprised had I not got my wallet back.
