The new Canadian Consul-General and his wife were injured after tackling a knife-wielding intruder at their Happy Valley home early yesterday.

Anthony Berger and Pamela Deacon both suffered knife wounds as they struggled with the man in the kitchen of their official residence in Goldsmith Road.

The police and Canadian authorities were quick to dismiss any suggestion that the incident could be linked to terrorism.

Ms Deacon, 54, is understood to have been upstairs working on a computer shortly before 6am when she heard a noise downstairs.

She discovered an intruder who had got in through a window. On seeing Ms Deacon the man seized a 20cm  knife from the kitchen.

At this point Mr Berger, 57, arrived on the scene and a struggle ensued during which the couple both received hand injuries.

The intruder, who police believe may have been responsible for other burglaries in the area that morning, fled through a window. Three patrolling officers later tackled him and one or more were injured as they subdued the man.

Police said the man, surnamed Lau, holds a Hong Kong identity card but is of Vietnamese origin. He was arrested for attempted burglary, robbery and obstructing officers.

Mr Berger, who took up his post in September, said: 'I recognise that this could happen anywhere and it's not going to dispel positive feelings I have for Hong Kong.'

Janice Vogtle, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Consulate, said: 'We can confirm that this morning an intruder entered the official residence and confronted the Consul-General and his wife with a knife before fleeing the premises.

'The Consul-General and his wife were treated for injuries and since been released from hospital. 'There is no indication there was a political motive to this incident.'

Senior Superintendent Peter Hunt said general security had been stepped up in the SAR but would not give details.

'I would like to reiterate that this is not a terrorist incident but a robbery of a purely criminal nature,' he said.
