LI FAI KNOWS all about being at the sharp end of life. The wushu athlete was 32 years old when she won a gold medal in taijiquan at the East Asian Games in Osaka, Japan, in May.

'It was the most unforgettable competition and the performance that I gave was the most satisfying,' Li, the mother of a six-year-old girl, says.

A World Championship gold medallist in 1993, Li not only focuses on her own training, but is also very active in nurturing young athletes. She believes in working for the future of the sport.

During the summer, she organised a three-month wushu training course - part of an eight-year project to develop potential athletes in time for the 2008 Olympics.

'I will offer those who perform remarkably well on the course a year's free training as encouragement,' she says.
