YOUR correspondent ''Tough task getting taxi'' (South China Morning Post, July 5) is absolutely right.

However, it's not only recently that getting a taxi has become difficult. It's been going on for far too long.

If you stand in Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, at night you would probably see scores of taxis with their ''For Hire'' signs partially covered and cruising the same street repeatedly. Why do they only partly cover the signs? The cardboard is folded in half and a hole is cut in the middle thus allowing the ''For Hire'' sign to peep out. At night you might think it's a taxi for hire from afar, but when they get close enough they refuse to take you.

Not so long ago the Post had an article about a taxi driver who built his reputation and business on simple good manners and good service.

If only the rest of them were like him then everything would be perfect. But then again, we don't live in a perfect world.
