HERMAN YAU LAI-TO
Herman Yau Lai-to (The Untold Story, From The Queen To The Chief Executive) has been a film director for 15 years. Unlike many vocations, being in the film industry means there is no distinction between weekends and weekdays, and Yau (left) says that most of his weekends are occupied by shooting.
'But when I don't have to work, my ideal weekend is spending time with my family,' says the 40-year-old, who is married and has an eight-year-old daughter.
'If I'm free on Friday night I like taking my wife and my daughter out for dinner. Though my daughter is only eight, she has many ideas about food. Our usual restaurants include Cafe des Artistes [Upper Ground Floor, California Tower, 30-32 D'Aguilar Street, Central. Tel: 2526 3880] because my daughter loves the food there. Another one is 27 at Park Lane Hotel [310 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2293 8888]. I normally spend no more than $2,000 on a dinner for three of us, but the cost depends on how expensive the wine I order is.
'If my daughter is free from school work, I take her to the ferry piers at Lei King Wan for fishing or to the prawn-catching courts on Saturday. There is one at North Point ferry pier [North Point waterfront] which my daughter likes. For prawn catching, they charge about $30 per hour. We spend one or two hours there.
'Afterwards we go for dinner. We like hot pot, but our Saturday regular is Star Cafe [21A Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2736 5050]. A bill for three costs less than $1,000. It serves great food at a reasonable price. I always recommend it to my friends. My favourite dish is grilled goose liver.
