I refer to your reader's suggestions about providing lanes for lap swimming at public pools in the letter headlined 'Drastic changes needed in our public pools' (South China Morning Post, October 5). In fact, we have already adopted this practice at the Morrison Hill, Kowloon Park, Tai Wan Shan, Kwun Tong and Tseung Kwan O pools. We shall consider extending this arrangement to other pools, should the demand arise.

Concerning the water level of pool water, we agree that maintaining the common overflow of a pool is an essential process in filtration of pool water. Therefore, our staff are required to observe water levels and adjust them whenever necessary.

As for staffing of public swimming pools, we have a manning scale for different types of pool complexes. During the peak season from June to August when demand is great, we deploy additional staff. Our lifeguards are required to perform lifesaving duties, cleaning duties and enforce public swimming pool regulations. The attendants at the turnstiles are temporary workers deployed to answer inquiries and maintain order during pool admission. We cannot arrange for lifeguards and attendants to double up on duties. The safety of swimmers is always our top priority.
