MR Patten will be setting aside official duties when he returns to Italy next month for a holiday with television presenter Jonathan Dimbleby.
The two friends and their families will be renting a villa in Umbria where they have been on holiday together twice before.
Government House has not announced dates of Mr Patten's holiday but the whole of August has been left free.
Mr Patten, his wife Lavender, and three daughters - Kate, 20, Laura, 18, and Alice, 13 - will stay with Dimbleby, his writer wife, Bel Mooney, and their daughter, Kitty, 12.
''They are great friends of ours and we've missed them greatly,'' said Mooney from her home at Upper Swainswick near Bath, the Governor's old constituency.
It will be Mr Patten's first proper holiday since he underwent heart surgery for hardening of the arteries this year.
