A take-away shop owner extradited from New Zealand to Hong Kong was remanded in custody yesterday having failed to pay $500,000 bail.
Yuen Kwok-fung, 46, who appeared before Magistrate William Ng in Eastern Court, was not required to enter pleas on three counts of obtaining property by deception and one of evasion of liability by deception.
Extradition proceedings were launched in 1999 and completed last month when New Zealand's Minister of Justice issued an order for Yuen's surrender to the SAR Government, prosecutor Derek Lai said.
Yuen was accused of obtaining $3,775,000 by deception from businessman Chan Wai-ming, trading as Yuet Kai Company, between February and April of 1995.
The case was adjourned to the District Court on December 3.
