DEVOTION to educating the handicapped has not only won Chan Hung-ki an award as an outstanding educator, but also a loving family.

  His wife, Eva Chan Ho Yuet-wah, who met him four years ago at the Caritas Lok Yan School, and their seven-month-old daughter yesterday joined him in celebrating his award.

  Mr Chan met his wife four years ago when he was assigned to help her create a device to stop students from salivating.

  He demonstrated his care and patience during the course of the project, leaving a deep impression on her.

  Mr Chan was one of 21 educators honoured yesterday.

  The 37-year-old said he found teaching meaningful and challenging.

  ''It is a different mode of teaching - it differs so much from ordinary schools,'' he said.

  The Chinese University graduate said it took time to get used to the teaching environment and the students, who were severely retarded.

  ''We have to be especially patient. The pupils are so different from those in ordinary schools - we have to accept the fact that they learn slowly.''   Mr Chan and his colleagues also act as a bridge of communication between parents and the school, social workers and even hospitals.

  Describing it as ''regrettable'' that the Government had placed handicapped education as a low priority, Mr Chan said more resources should be given to such children.

  Mr Chan is going to take up a teaching post with the Sir Robert Black Education College in September. He said he wanted to train people who were devoted to handicapped children.
