The head of Invest Hong Kong, Mike Rowse, said yesterday he had been praised by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa and other top officials after he gave up his British nationality to become Chinese.
Mr Rowse believed his case would alert more expatriate civil servants to the possibility of applying to become Chinese citizens.
Speaking on the ATV programme Newsline last night, he said he had received commendations from Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen and Financial Secretary Antony Leung Kam-chung.
'They sent me e-mails and said well done,' the Invest Hong Kong director-general said.
Mr Tung, who has been briefed on the case, also made similar remarks, said Mr Rowse.
The former British national is believed to be the first Western civil servant to become a Chinese national. He said a growing sense of Hong Kong being his home had prompted his decision.
