A mistress whose face was permanently disfigured when her lover's wife doused her with acid poured acid over her attacker's daughter four years later.

Hui Fung-kuen, 40, who appeared in court yesterday, admitted she tipped a pot of hydrochloric acid over Fong Mei-chi, 25, on April 9 but claimed her intended victim was the girl's father, Fong Shu-ming, 54.

She said she felt controlled by Mr Fong and wanted to escape the relationship with him. Hui also said she felt no malice towards his wife - Lin Wai-ying, 52, now serving seven years for the 1997 attack - believing they were both victims of Mr Fong.

During Lin's sentencing in the District Court in May 1998, Deputy Judge Abu Bakar bin Wahab delivered a stinging rebuke to the cheating husband for his 'acrobatic' love life.

The court had heard Lin became depressed by her husband's affair and tried to commit suicide.

Yesterday Hui lowered her scarred face and sobbed as prosecutor Simon Kwan outlined the facts of the case.

He said that after Mr Fong's wife was jailed, he and Hui resumed their affair. When the lovers met in a hotel on April 4 this year, Mr Fong told Hui he would be on the mainland from April 7 to 10.

Unbeknown to Mr Fong, Hui had made duplicate keys and entered his Wong Tai Sin flat on April 9, bringing a bottle of corrosive fluid which she emptied into a cooking pot.

Soon after 8pm, Mr Fong's daughter, Mei-chi, returned home from work and was ambushed by her father's lover, who poured the acid over her head.

Mr Kwan said that when Ms Fong 'ran for her life', Hui grabbed her and dragged her to the floor. The daughter managed to open the door and cry out for help.

After another struggle, Ms Fong, who had white smoke pouring off her body, fled into her neighbour's home and doused herself with water while Hui left.

Ms Fong was released from hospital with no permanent injuries.

Hui gave herself up to the police two days later and admitted she had poured the liquid on the young woman. But she later retracted her confession, telling police the pot was accidentally tipped over.

Defence counsel Ronald Mayne read a letter to the court yesterday written by Hui to express her remorse.

'I wanted to end my relationship with Fong but instead I have hurt an innocent person,' Mr Mayne read. 'I have paid my price for starting a relationship with Fong, when I was disfigured. My whole life was ruined by Fong, I have no future.

'Emotionally, no one can help me recover from my pain and suffering.'

Mr Mayne asked for the court's mercy towards his client, saying she had panicked when Ms Fong walked through the door instead of Mr Fong. He also said Hui had diluted the acid because she did not want to inflict the same injuries she herself was living with.

'She is haunted by the tragedy of her past and the spectre has followed her to this very day in the act involving Fong's daughter,' Mr Mayne said.

Mr Justice Colin Jackson adjourned sentencing in the Court of First Instance until December 6 for background reports.
