Television and movie actor Vincent Wan Yeung-ming (right) has been in the industry for 13 years. While he likes playing golf, and going to discos and karaoke bars at the weekend, his favourite spots are all north of the border.
'Every day can be my weekend,' says Wan, who was born in the year of the rooster. 'My ideal is to spend time playing golf on the mainland, but normally I avoid going there over the weekend because it is too congested, and I don't want to be hit by other golf balls.
'Because I have to film and take care of my business on the mainland, I spend a lot of time there, especially in Guangzhou. I usually drive across the border with a few friends on Friday. We go in a group of four as a team. I like to play the golf course owned by San Jiu Enterprise (Bagua 4 Road, Bagualing, Shenzhen, tel: 243 1999) and Xili Lake Holiday Resort (Nanshan, Shenzhen, tel: 662 6888). The San Jiu course is actually a private club for the military. It's not open to the public - you can only get in if you have connections. But it is a very beautiful place. The course is built along the hillside and the natural landscape is preserved.
'Golf equipment can cost a fortune but normally clubs priced around $10,000 are good enough. My set cost me $20,000. I've been playing for more than three years. The cost of a day's golf trip to the mainland is about $1,000.
'I also like to eat at Chinese restaurants with friends. Many of them serve delicious food and it's very economical. A meal for four costs only $500 at most.
'Cyber Disco & Club at the Grand Hyatt hotel (5-7 Dongmennan Road, Shenzhen, tel: 232 8188) is where I frequently go for drinks and karaoke. It has a good atmosphere but, most importantly, I'm one of the shareholders of the place so I don't have to pay when I drink there.
