A gang of robbers who fled with $26 million worth of Nokia mobile phone components on Thursday may find themselves with a worthless haul, a senior police officer said yesterday.

The components were designed for specific Nokia models, said Senior Superintendent Albert Kwok Cho-kuen of Kowloon West regional crime unit.

'The phone parts could not be assembled into handsets or used for other mobile phone brands,' he said, adding that only the mobile phone company itself could use the components.

The phone parts were being transported in a truck from Nokia's godown in Yuen Long when the lorry was sandwiched between two stolen cars. The driver was held at knifepoint, bound and blindfolded, and his vehicle hijacked.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in Wong Uk.
