Is Jeremy Peters' mother abusing him? Marylin (Sharon Leal) thinks so and keeps a close eye on Jeremy. Her suspicions are raised further when he calls her after being involved in a car accident. Marylin picks him up and takes him home. She asks him about his college plans. Even though he wants to go to Missouri for a highly respected journalism programme, he's resigned himself to going to a local college because his mother feels that living at home he'll be more focused and stay out of trouble. Marylin offers to talk to his mother but he nervously declines. Upon reaching home a curt Mrs Peters does not want to hear his side of the accident. The next day at school the student is absent, and Marylin confesses her suspicions to Senate.
Meanwhile throwing his weight around as usual, Guber (Anthony Heald, above) is trying to teach an African-American student, Kevin Jackson, to 'talk properly' in preparation for the state finals of the debate team. Jackson claims that he was only picked for the team because he's black and the topic is the Aids crisis in Africa. Guber heatedly lectures Jackson on being a black victim, and tells him he was selected based on talent and not skin colour.
While all this is going on Principal Harper (Chi McBride) is busy romancing a students' mother and discovering that the path of true love seldom runs smoothly.
