Hockey draw lifts SAR above Macau

Hong Kong's hockey squad finished in seventh place at the All China National Games which ended on Sunday in Guangdong.

The team dumped Macau, the only other non-professional side, into eighth place after a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The SAR's historic draw against Anhui last week, their first point at a national games, elevated them above Macau who lost 4-3 to that province.

The performance is a great improvement on the 1997 national games when Hong Kong lost all their matches and finished last.

Trailing 0-1 with a minute to go, the SAR team looked to be down and out against Macau when up popped New Method School physical education teacher Wong Wai-kiu to score a dramatic equaliser.

'The whole team were lifted by the goal, even though we didn't win a medal. It's a great way to finish the games,' said Josephine Ko Sik-kwan, public relations officer of the Hong Kong Hockey Association.

The gold medal was won by Guangdong Province, while Liaoning took the silver and Gansu the bronze.
