It is a long drive in the Time Machine to the day 42 years ago when Mr Lu lifted the first Hong Kong Open trophy - and his hat in inimitable fashion to acknowledge the cheers - in the inaugural tournament at Fanling.
Taiwan's Lu Liang-huan would become the then Royal Hong Kong Golf Club's first resident professional and later delight galleries with his demeanour when finishing second in the British Open.
At that first Hong Kong Open back in 1959, he trumped Australian aces Kel Nagle and Bruce Crampton by one stroke.
The 'cobber clobbers' might have been disappointed they could not take the crown back Down Under, but Peter Thomson, who won the British Open five times in his career, made amends with a hat trick the next three years.
Since those early days near the banks of the Beas River, the tournament has hosted a galaxy of stars. This year's field, which includes Jose-Maria Olazabal, Paul McGinley and Adam Scott - tagged 'Australia's Tiger Woods' - should again ensure the success of a showpiece already rich in history and heroics from the performances of players such as Americans Orville Moody, Freddie Couples, Tom Watson, Britons Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Tony Jacklin and Colin Montgomerie and German Meister Swinger Bernhard Langer.
For the second consecutive year, Swiss watch manufacturer Omega is the lead sponsor of the tournament which will be held at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling from today until Sunday.
Stephen Urquhart, president of Omega, said: 'Golf is extremely popular in Europe and Asia and because both these markets are renowned for appreciating high-end luxury goods, they play an integral part in Omega's global golf strategy.
