CRASH TEST: Water-borne emergency services personnel take part in a simulated plane crash exercise in Chai Wan yesterday.
The Hong Kong East divisional commander of the Fire Services Department, Chan Chor-kam, said the drill simulated the crash of a plane carrying 100 passengers and crew into two three-storey residential blocks on the Chai Wan waterfront. About 120 firemen, ambulancemen and officers from the Civil Aid Services took part in the exercise.
Mr Chan said firemen had to break into two coaches, standing in as the aircraft cabin, to save 'victims'.
Nine fire engines, four ambulances and a mobile casualty treatment centre were sent to the cargo handling area in Sheung On Street.
Two fireboats and teams of divers were also deployed, as the drill called for the rear part of the plane to fall into the water and catch fire.
