China's universities and colleges enrolled 2.6 million freshmen this year, 800,000 more than last year, the Ministry of Education has revealed. The figures represent more than 60 per cent of applicants. Most of the new students chose to major in science and engineering, administration, liberal arts and medicine, Xinhua reported. Ministry of Education officials said China was planning to raise the number of university students to 16 million by 2005, compared with a total enrolment of more than 11 million in the years spanning 1996 to 2000. According to a detailed plan for educational development, university students will account for 15 per cent of all those studying by 2005. By then, postgraduate students are expected to number 600,000.
