'I don't know how it happened. Everything went my way,' marvels Bjornstad after a 61 puts him in front
Unsung Norseman Henrik Bjornstad overshadowed the Fab Four at the 2001 Omega Hong Kong Open yesterday. All eyes in the build-up and over the first two rounds have been on marquee names Jose Maria Olazabal, Michael Campbell, Zhang Lianwei and Adam Scott.
But it was Viking raider Bjornstad who fired the imagination after coming from nowhere to shoot a course record 10-under-par 61 and take a slender one shot lead into the final round.
Hot in his wake are young Australian sensation Scott and Double US Masters champion Olazabal. Scott carded a five-under-par 66 to aggregate 16-under-par 197 and remain one stroke behind. The Aussie is in fine position to wrap up his second title this year. He has played consistently throughout and is the man Bjornstad will most have to watch out for today.
Olazabal found his swing and putt to shoot a splendid 64 to stay two shots off the pace, as did England's Mark Foster who came in with a 67. A further stroke behind and three shots off the pace are Swedish duo Carl Pettersson and Anders Forsbrand, and Welshman Mark Pilkington.
Bjornstad modestly shrugged his shoulders when asked about his jaw-dropping third-round effort. 'I don't know how it happened. Everything went my way. It could have been better if I had managed to birdie two easy chances on 13 and 14.'
At that stage, Bjornstad was nine-under for the day, having sizzled through the front nine with an eagle and five birdies, followed by two more birdies on the 10th and 12th holes.
