Does recyclable waste end up in landfills?

There has been a large increase in the number of recycling bins in Hong Kong and adverts are screened on TV encouraging people to use them.

We are asked to separate paper, tin and plastic and place them in appropriate bins, though glass is not mentioned.

I have contributed to the cause, but recently questioned it all when told that the collected items are all just dumped into landfills. Where do they really go? I am sure others would like an answer to this question.
