A bereaved dog-owner filed a writ in the District Court yesterday claiming a pet shop owner's negligence led to the death of her Yorkshire terrier.

Cindy Ng Mei-mui is seeking $2,800, including medical expenses and the cost of burying the dog, from Forever Beauty Pet Shop's owner, Yu Kam-hon, claiming her dog strangled itself after being left alone tied to a table.

The terrier, Tung Tung, was bought for her by Ms Ng's husband on their fifth wedding anniversary in 1994 and became Ms Ng's only immediate family member after her husband died in June last year, the writ said.

Ms Ng took Tung Tung to one of Mr Yu's three pet shops on March 27 for beauty services. Mr Yu later informed Ms Ng that the terrier died of suffocation in the shop after an employee put Tung Tung on a table and tied the dog to it while answering a phone call, the writ said.

Ms Ng is claiming unspecified damages from Mr Yu for subsequent psychological problems and for breach of his duty to ensure Tung Tung's safety, the writ said.
