A SERIES of advertisements announcing the appointment of a new honorary consul for the West African nation of Sierra Leone has upset the Protocol Office of the Hongkong Government.
The advertisements announced Frank Yiu as its new honorary consul but the Protocol Office said he had not been approved by the British Government as the country's recognised representative in Hongkong.
The Protocol Office is known to be unhappy because its telephone number was used in the advertisements.
According to proper diplomatic procedures, Sierra Leone should notify the Foreign Office of any new appointment.
If the appointment is approved, the Hongkong Government will be notified and the name of new honorary consul will be gazetted.
The Director of Protocol, Vivian Warrington, confirmed yesterday that Mr Yiu was not being recognised by Hongkong as having the status of a honorary consul.
