A karaoke chain closed yesterday, throwing 70 people out of work and adding to the wave of failed businesses in the leisure sector.

T-Art Karaoke, owned by the son of former Regional Council chairman Cheung Yan-lung, closed its three premises in Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsuen Wan.

A deputy manager at the Causeway Bay premises said management had informed him of the closure yesterday, saying owner Cheung Charn-sing had left Hong Kong. No explanation was given to staff about the decision, he said.

The move came shortly after the closure of the chain's two other branches in Jordan and Wan Chai in September and July respectively.

The deputy manager, who only gave his name as Ah Hang, said the company had failed to pay about 70 employees since last month. T-Art Karaoke bosses could not be contacted last night.

Waiter Ah Ho, 22, said he was not surprised by the closure of the business as trade had been slow.
