LADY Thatcher has stepped into the controversy over Hongkong funding of the Conservative Party.
She is understood to have written to local businessmen, including Li Ka-shing, thanking them for their past support and expressing the hope they will continue to give generously.
The former prime minister is said to be outraged by the party's failure to defend some of its most generous donors against allegations appearing in sections of the media, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph.
She is particularly concerned about the long-term effect on party finances.
Prime Minister John Major has not responded to suggestions within the party that he intervene, either by writing to donors or speaking out in support of them.
Lady Thatcher apparently believes that funds from Hongkong will dry up, further increasing the party's GBP19 million (HK$219.83 million) deficit.
