Weichong Marwing bowed out for the year in disappointing fashion when a shoulder injury forced him on to the sidelines after just two of his six rides for the night. The South African, who now begins a five-meeting suspension for careless riding that will keep him out until January 1, said: 'I had a fall on Tuesday morning and hurt my shoulder. It didn't seem too serious at the time, but it's different when you're in a race and you have to get behind your horse and really push.

'I felt it after the second race and the doctor looked at it and said I shouldn't continue. I've torn a muscle, but it's not too bad. I just need some rest and physiotherapy.'

Marwing, who is lying fourth in the jockeys' championship with 18 winners, added: 'It's disappointing because I had been hoping to have a good night before my ban started, but I'm trying to be positive. I'll stay here over Christmas and work hard, and hopefully I'll come back with some good chances.'

The South African picked up the injury at trackwork when he fell from the Ivan Allan-trained C'Est La Vie, his intended ride in the fifth race. Following Marwing's withdrawal, the horse had to be scratched when no jockey could be found to take the ride.

Marwing, who was fourth on Vigoroso in the first race and unplaced in the second aboard Iliketosmile before having to retire from the fray, at least did not miss out on a winner. None of his other intended rides - Chinesesport Glory, The Rich Man and Hero's Way - even made the first four.
