Police were last night looking for the owner of a village house in Fanling after its two tenants died in an arson attack. Police and fire officers were called after the two-storey house in Ma Shi Po West Tsuen, Ma Sik Road, was torched shortly after 7.30am. Ho Kwok-keung, 29, and his girlfriend Tong Fung-ching, 25, were asleep inside at the time. Firemen had to break open the metal gate and force open the door before they could tackle the burning flat. The flames were put out within 10 minutes of fire crews arriving. Ho and his girlfriend, both drug addicts, were found dead on the first floor of the house. 'It appears that they woke up and found the house alight and they then ran to the first floor where they were overcome by smoke,' said Senior Superintendent Albert Kwok Cho-kuen, of the New Territories North regional crime unit. There was no rear exit in the house and all the windows had fixed grilles. 'The metal gate of the surrounding fence was locked with a padlock and the wooden door of the house was locked with a chain and padlock at the time of the incident,' Mr Kwok said. 'The blaze broke out at the only exit to the house. We believe kerosene was poured in the entrance and then lit,' he said. A plastic container with traces of kerosene was found outside the house. Mr Kwok said the motive behind the attack had not yet been established and police were looking into the backgrounds of the two victims. It is understood there were no witnesses. The pair were tenants and moved in several months ago. Officers were also investigating the victims' relationship with the owner of the house. Yesterday, detectives conducted door-to-door inquiries in the village and officers from the Identification Bureau were trying to collect fingerprints from the plastic fuel containers.
