David Hayes' highly promising Splendid Star displayed distinct improvement in his second barrier trial in as many weeks when he finished a hard-held runner-up to Splendid Patrol in the second of two all-weather barrier trials at Sha Tin yesterday. The speedy son of Danzero has been taken along patiently by Hayes so far this season following an operation during the break. His work rate has progressed steadily over the past month and he looks cherry-ripe for a bold showing when he makes his reappearance.

David Oughton's Irish import Point Grey, who is rated 105, was given an easy time in his first trial by apprentice Way Leung but went to the line quite strongly. He is another highly-rated import who will be eligible for the Derby, and while he still looks a fair way off his peak, he still managed to leave a positive impression.

Ricky Yiu Poon-fie had both Lion Rock and Super Sprint taking part and the pair went through the motions in a pleasing manner.

The first heat was won by John Size's Run And Win, who is certainly working with plenty of zest at present. The son of Last Tycoon confirmed the promise he showed in a barrier trial last month and the freshen-up he has been given by his new trainer appears to have worked wonders for him. Shane Dye always had plenty in reserve and he can be followed when he next appears.

Geoff Lane's Paradis made steady headway in the home straight when allowed to lengthen his stride under Eric Legrix and the unraced son of Hennessy showed marked improvement on his previous trials. He looks a cut above his rating of 52 and based on his steady trial he is worth keeping safe when he makes his debut.

Derek Cruz's Celebration was noted in another barrier trial last month and since then his work has picked up markedly. Simon Yim smothered him in the pack yesterday, and he too appeared to have more than enough in reserve.
