It was a big blow for foreign domestic helpers like me to learn that the Government is considering a further cut in our pay.
If this goes ahead, it will be the second time our wages have been reduced since the economic slowdown.
Readers should be made aware that at least 30 to 40 per cent of our total salary is being returned to the Hong Kong economy, through what we spend on our days off. On Sundays you can see shops and restaurants full of migrant workers of all nationalities.
Surely, this can only help the SAR. And yet the Government now proposes to reduce our already meagre salary. We all work long hours and get no overtime pay.
If the Government is really worried about excessive wages affecting the economy, perhaps it should look at the salaries and privileges of our senior civil servants, instead of picking on migrant workers who have no real voice in the community and cannot defend themselves.
