The Hong Kong Environmental Protection Festival has urged everyone to pitch in to make the world a better place. 'Waste Reduction' was the theme of this year's one-day event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. It provided a wake-up call for visitors, with landfills in Hong Kong nearing capacity. A time tunnel provided a fresh perspective on waste reduction, showing how grocery items used to be wrapped in newspapers and grass reeds. These have since been replaced by plastic bags, leading to more pollution. At the end of the tunnel, respondents who answered a series of questions correctly received a souvenir. Visitors could 'donate' their waste paper, aluminium cans and plastic bottles to recycling bins across the venue. They could even sign up as environmental protection ambassadors, promoting the green message throughout the SAR. This scheme has become popular among school children, with boy scouts and girl guides being in the forefront of the campaign for several years.
