LUXURY CAR GIANT BMW gathered the well-heeled in a massive marquee at the Tamar site to unveil its 7 Series saloon. There were assorted Harilelas, model Janet Ma and husband actor Michael Wong, Adrian Li, son of David Li, of the Bank of East Asia family, and Harriet Tung accompanied by daughter Leigh. Guests wolfed down a deluxe buffet provided by the Mandarin's Vong restaurant, and waited eagerly for the car show. They gathered around the rotating platform as the sedans glided down the runway like supermodels. Special guest emcee Crystal Kwok recited an elaborate introduction and instrumentalists performed dramatic entrance music. Minders dressed in BMW blue and white leather watched for champagne spills as guests slid into the plush seats to play behind the wheel and marvel at the hi-tech wizardry of the minimalist, ergonomic dashboards. Film director Alfred Cheng nearly fell over in the rush to take a look. Pleased to eat you 'THE FINEST CHAMPAGNE, enchanting melodies, superlative gourmet with the brilliant stars . . .' was how the Riche Monde Dom Perignon Ball at the Grand Hyatt party was billed on the elaborate invitations. But the evening got off to a shaky start as guests arrived late and languished over cocktails, delaying the performance by the Eroica Trio chamber ensemble - and dinner. Certain guests, who shall remain nameless, were so hungry they started eating the centrepieces on their tables, which consisted of figs and cherries in large, tall glass vases. Thank goodness for the endless supply of Dom Perignon. Ball brings a triple treat IT WAS A BUSY NIGHT at Philippe Charriol's annual auction ball, also held at the Grand Hyatt. There were three parts to the evening's agenda - the Philippe Charriol Foundation art auction of wooden sculptural pieces by Nigerian Uchechukwu Onyishi (in Hong Kong on a three-month residency), the foundation's 16th annual art competition with the theme wearable art, and Philippe's 59th birthday. Man-about-town/barrister/VP of Pacific Century Insurance Holdings Kevin Hon was a delightful first-time emcee while guests at fashion designer Pacino Wan's table rooted for their favourite pieces in the fashion parade.
