1963: United States President Lyndon Johnson expressed his appreciation for a message of condolence sent by the Government of Hong Kong following the assassination of his predecessor, John F Kennedy.

1968: Fu Chi, a left-wing film star, and Liu Yat-yuen, a top left-wing film-company official, were released from detention. They were among 36 political detainees arrested during the previous year's disturbances.

1971: For sale. Luxurious 2,200- square-foot flat at 40 Conduit Road. Three bedrooms, two sitting rooms and car park. Renting for $2,800 per month. Selling price $280,000.

1996: Shipping magnate Tung Chee-hwa swept to victory in a poll to choose Hong Kong's first Chief Executive. He would take office on July 1, 1997, following the territory's return to China.
