Herbert Smith managing partner Mark Lloyd-Williams spent a day at the other end of the corporate food chain, polishing shoes for $20 a time to raise money for their firm's entry into the 2nd annual Tug-of-War competition, held last Sunday at Stanley Fort.

Eight law firms - the others being Allen & Overy, Baker & McKenzie, Clifford Chance, Denton Wilde Sapte, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Johnson Stokes & Master, and Simmons & Simmons - took part in the event, which raised about $100,000 for the campaign. Each team was made up of 10 people.

Event organiser Jo Jones developed a sore throat from shouting while refereeing but said it was worth it for such a good cause.

The teams were raising money for the KELY Support Group, this year's beneficiary of Operation Santa Claus, which helps youngsters with drug, alcohol and other problems.

The event's cup went to winning team Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, while Allen & Overy took the runner's-up plate.

Ms Jones said a number of staff at Herbert Smith watched the shoe-shining effort with amusement.
