The package includes a licence for the next version of Word for Windows, due out later this year, allowing users to upgrade to Word 6.0 for MS-DOS now and move to Word 6.0 for Windows later at no extra cost.

Microsoft Word version 6.0 for MS-DOS simplifies common word processing tasks and brings new functionality to the millions of Word for MS-DOS users, aligning the software more closely with other members of Microsoft's word processing family.

''We've seen a dramatic shift away from character-based MS-DOS word processors as users move to the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. As that shift continues, many of our customers need to support a mix of users on all three platforms,'' said Ramny Fite, marketing manager of Microsoft Hongkong Ltd.

Among time-saving features making their debut in the MS-DOS word processing environment are Drag and Drop editing and a new ribbon that gives one-click access to common formatting functions, such as changing fonts, indenting and making text bold, italic or underlined.

The new package also includes Microsoft's Table Tool, enabling tables to be inserted in one easy step, and the automatic bullet feature, which adds bullets or numbers to selected text.
